What Nobody Tells You
About BAMS in 2026

When a student from Nagaland or Mizoram comes to OEF and says "NEET score thoda kam aya, kya kare?" — the first thing we tell them is: please don't treat BAMS as a consolation prize. Because it is not one.

India's Prime Minister launched an entire ministry for AYUSH. The Government of India is spending thousands of crores building AIIMS-equivalent AYUSH institutions. International demand for Indian Ayurvedic doctors is growing every year. Wellness tourism alone contributes ₹90,000 crore to India's economy — and BAMS doctors are at the centre of all of it.

OEF has placed hundreds of students in BAMS colleges across India. Many of them initially came to us hoping for MBBS. Today, those same students are running their own Ayurvedic clinics, working in corporate wellness companies, and earning very well. Several have told us directly: "Sir, BAMS was the right decision for me. Tension mat karo."

"A doctor who commits to their profession — whether MBBS, BDS, or BAMS — will always succeed. The degree matters less than the dedication. But the right guidance at the right time matters enormously."

— Dr. Kausshik Hazaricka, MBBS · Founder, OEF · Est. 2008

AYUSH Degrees Explained

BAMS · BHMS · BSMS · BUMS —
Which One is Right for You?

There are four AYUSH undergraduate degrees in India. Each has its own tradition, scope, and career path. Here is a clear guide to all four.

BAMS — Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery

Most popular AYUSH degree · Governed by CCIM · ~26,000 seats India-wide

Most Popular

What You Study in BAMS

BAMS is a full medical degree that covers both Ayurvedic and modern medical sciences. You study Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry alongside Dravyaguna (Pharmacology), Panchakarma, Shalyatantra (Surgery), and Kaumarabhritya (Paediatrics). The curriculum is rigorous — nearly as intensive as MBBS in the first two years.

What makes BAMS unique is the integration of ancient wisdom with modern medical understanding. You graduate as a complete practitioner, not a limited one.

BAMS Practice Rights — Be Clear on This

  • Prescribe Ayurvedic medicines — full rights
  • Run your own clinic / hospital — fully legal
  • Perform minor surgeries as per Shalyatantra
  • Title of "Doctor" — fully legal and recognised
  • Government AYUSH Medical Officer posts
  • Panchakarma therapy centres — high earning
  • Corporate wellness, insurance panel empanelment

Note on Allopathy: BAMS doctors cannot prescribe allopathic medicines in most states (there are ongoing legal debates). We recommend being clear about this scope. A focused BAMS practice is highly rewarding — no need to enter territory that creates legal complications.

BHMS — Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery

Homeopathic medical system · Governed by CCH · ~13,000 seats India-wide

About BHMS

BHMS is a 5.5-year degree (4.5 years + 1 year internship) in Homeopathic medicine, governed by the Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH) under AYUSH Ministry. Homeopathy has a very large, loyal patient base in India — Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala particularly. BHMS doctors are also in high demand globally, especially in Europe and Southeast Asia.

The curriculum includes modern medical sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology) alongside Homeopathic philosophy, Materia Medica, and Repertory. BHMS graduates can run independent practices, join hospitals, and appear for MD (Homeopathy) postgraduate.

Let us talk about the numbers. Because ultimately, your family is making a significant financial investment in your education, and they deserve honest projections.

Career Paths for BAMS Graduates

Private Ayurvedic Practice / Clinic

The most flexible route. After BMS + 1-year internship, you can open your own clinic or practice. In NE India — where Ayurvedic practitioners are relatively scarce — a well-established practice can earn ₹40,000–₹1.2 Lakhs per month within 4–5 years. Panchakarma centres are particularly profitable, with per-patient revenue of ₹5,000–₹30,000 per treatment course.

Government AYUSH Medical Officer

All state governments — including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and others — recruit BAMS/BHMS graduates as AYUSH Medical Officers. The starting salary is ₹45,000–₹75,000/month with full government benefits. NE states are particularly keen to post AYUSH doctors in rural and tribal areas — there are often reserved vacancies for local candidates.

Wellness, Pharma & International

India's wellness industry is one of the fastest growing globally. BAMS graduates are employed by Patanjali, Dabur, Zandu, and dozens of other companies in R&D, quality control, and medical affairs. Corporate wellness programmes, Ayurvedic resorts, and yoga retreat centres pay ₹50,000–₹1.5 Lakhs/month. International opportunities exist in UAE, UK, Malaysia, and Canada for trained Ayurvedic doctors.

MD Ayurveda — Postgraduate Specialisation

After BAMS + internship, you can appear for AIAPGET (All India AYUSH PG Entrance Test) for MD Ayurveda — a 3-year specialisation. MD Ayurveda specialists in Panchakarma, Kayachikitsa, or Rasashastra earn significantly higher than general BAMS practitioners. This is the postgraduate route if you want deeper expertise and premium earnings.

Real Questions, Honest Answers

BAMS / AYUSH Admission 2026 — FAQs

Is a BAMS doctor a "real doctor" in India?
+

Yes. BAMS graduates are registered medical practitioners under the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) Act. They are legally recognised as doctors, can use the prefix "Dr.", run clinics, prescribe Ayurvedic medicines, and are empanelled with health insurance schemes including CGHS and ECHS. The Supreme Court of India has upheld BAMS doctors' rights to practice. In rural and semi-urban India, BAMS doctors are a critical part of the primary healthcare system.

Can I open a hospital after BAMS in Northeast India?
+

Yes. After completing BAMS, you can open an Ayurvedic clinic or hospital. In NE India, the Clinical Establishments Act governs registration. A single-doctor BAMS clinic can be registered relatively easily. Many BAMS doctors in Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya run multi-department practices combining Ayurvedic consultation, Panchakarma therapy, and wellness services. With proper planning, a well-run practice in Guwahati or any NE state capital can become significantly profitable within 3–5 years.

Which is better — BAMS or BHMS?
+

BAMS has more seats, more colleges distributed across India, and broader career options including government postings, pharma industry, and international opportunities. BHMS has a very dedicated patient base (homeopathy followers are extremely loyal), slightly lower fees in some states, and strong demand in West Bengal and Maharashtra. For NE India students, BAMS is generally the better recommendation because of seat availability, proximity of colleges, and career scope. However, if you have a genuine interest in homeopathy, BHMS is equally excellent. OEF will discuss this with you honestly in your free counselling session.

Which states have the most affordable BAMS management quota colleges?
+

The most affordable BAMS management quota fees are in Madhya Pradesh (₹1.5–2.5 Lakhs/year), Rajasthan (₹2–3 Lakhs/year), and Maharashtra (₹2–3.5 Lakhs/year). Karnataka and Tamil Nadu tend to have slightly higher fees (₹3–4 Lakhs/year) but with better infrastructure. OEF has direct college tie-ups across all these states and will recommend the best option based on your budget, NEET score, and preferences.

What is AIAPGET and when can I appear after BAMS?
+

AIAPGET (All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test) is the national entrance exam for MD/MS Ayurveda, MD Homeopathy, MD Unani, and other AYUSH postgraduate courses. It is conducted by NTA. After completing BAMS (or BHMS/BUMS) degree and 1-year internship, you become eligible. MD Ayurveda specialisations include Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Shalakya Tantra, Rasashastra, and Kaumarabhritya. MD Ayurveda specialists earn significantly more than general BAMS practitioners.
