What These Numbers
Actually Mean for Your Family
On the 2026-27 figures in our tables, Chhattisgarh is the most affordable, starting around ₹7.45 lakh a year, followed by West Bengal and Bihar. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the deemed universities sit at the top end — several deemed universities exceed ₹25 lakh a year. Cheapest is rarely the whole answer though: a lower fee in a distant state with a low-footfall teaching hospital can be worse value than a higher fee closer to home.
Tuition-focused, and annual. Hostel and mess typically add ₹1.5–3 lakh a year, and most colleges also charge a caution deposit, university registration and annual examination fees. Several deemed universities require a substantial refundable security deposit at admission on top. Before committing, ask the college in writing for the complete first-year outflow and any year-on-year escalation clause — families who budget from the tuition line alone routinely see a first-year bill 25–35% higher than expected.
Management quota is open to any Indian citizen with a valid NEET UG score and generally carries no domicile condition. NRI quota requires documented NRI, OCI or PIO status or sponsorship by a qualifying blood relative, and the fee is usually higher and often quoted in US dollars. NRI cut-offs tend to be lower, which is precisely why the eligibility documentation is scrutinised so heavily at verification. See our NRI quota page for the Supreme Court criteria.
Deemed universities do not go through state counselling at all — every seat is allotted by MCC on NEET UG rank, so you register with MCC rather than a state authority. Their fees are generally higher than state private colleges, and several also require a bank guarantee or large security deposit at admission. Yes, in most cases. Management quota seats generally carry no domicile requirement, which is why they matter so much for Assam and wider Northeast students — Assam has no private medical college of its own. State quota seats in these same colleges are usually closed to non-domicile candidates. The nearest genuinely open option inside the region is PA Sangma International Medical College in Meghalaya, about an hour from Guwahati.
They reflect the 2026-27 figures available to us and are subject to revision by the state fee committee or the college. Fees also move in both directions — most rise year on year, but we have seen genuine decreases too. Always confirm the current fee committee notification directly with the college before any payment, and be cautious of anyone quoting a figure that differs materially from the published notification.
No. Any payment demanded above the approved fee structure — whatever it is called: donation, building fund, development charge, corpus fund — is capitation, and it is prohibited under NMC regulations and state anti-capitation legislation.
