MS opens the door to a surgical career. But which branch? OEF has guided Northeast India’s surgeons for 17 years. Here is our honest guide to every MS branch.
MS (Master of Surgery) is the postgraduate surgical degree that comes after MBBS + NEET PG. It is a 3-year programme at accredited colleges. You can pursue MS Orthopaedics, MS General Surgery, MS ENT, MS Ophthalmology, MS OBG, MS Respiratory Surgery, and more.
Unlike MD which is mostly hospital or lab-based, MS leads to hands-on surgical practice. Operating theatre confidence builds over the 3 years. After MS, many doctors choose to further specialise into MCh (super-specialty surgery) via NEET SS.
Mandatory: NEET PG qualification is required for all MS admissions without exception. No legitimate institution offers MS without a valid NEET PG score. OEF guides you through the MCC and institutional processes.

Northeast India — Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim — has a critically under-served surgical ecosystem. In a region of 45 million people, there are fewer qualified surgeons than a single district hospital in Delhi. An MS-qualified surgeon returning home from any of these states enters a market with almost no competition and enormous unmet need.
OEF has guided MBBS doctors from all 8 NE states into MS programmes over 17 years. The pattern is consistent: those who complete MS General Surgery, MS Orthopaedics, or MS ENT and return to Northeast India build practices that are full within 12 months of opening. Referral networks develop naturally because there simply are not enough surgeons to meet demand.
Road accidents, sports injuries, and age-related joint disease are common across NE India. Guwahati, Imphal, Shillong, and Dimapur each have fewer than 5 orthopaedic surgeons. An MS Orthopaedics graduate returning home can expect ₹4–8L/month within 2 years of private practice setup.
ENT cases — chronic sinusitis, hearing loss, tonsillitis, laryngeal conditions — are extremely common in NE India. ENT surgeons are very few outside Guwahati. MS ENT graduates in smaller NE cities see 40–60 patients a day immediately. Private practice earnings reach ₹2–4L/month relatively quickly.
Cataract, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are growing at scale across NE India. Dedicated eye hospitals are emerging. An MS Ophthalmologist can set up a focused eye practice with phacoemulsification capability and build ₹3–6L/month within 3 years. Some are setting up surgical camps in rural NE districts, generating both income and community impact.
NEET PG is mandatory for all MS admissions without exception. OEF guides through the official process only.
MS Orthopaedics, MS ENT, and MS Ophthalmology offer the best combination of demand and earnings for a doctor returning to NE India. General Surgery is essential everywhere. OEF recommends matching your branch choice to the specific district or city you plan to practice in — the need varies significantly. Call 9085064444 for region-specific guidance based on your home district.
MS management quota fees at private colleges range from ₹10 Lakhs to ₹45 Lakhs per year depending on specialisation and institution. MS Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology tend to be more expensive due to higher demand. MS General Surgery and ENT are relatively more accessible. OEF provides verified fee information for each institution we work with.
Absolutely. MS OBG is available as either an MD or MS degree depending on the institution. NE India has a very significant shortage of OBG specialists in rural and semi-urban areas. An MS OBG graduate from Assam or Manipur setting up practice in their home district will have more patients than they can manage within months. OEF has guided several MBBS doctors from NE India into OBG programmes.
MS (Master of Surgery) admission in India is governed by NMC and follows the same NEET PG-based process as MD. After MBBS and internship, you appear for NEET PG. Based on your rank and score, you access government counselling (MCC + state), or management quota seats at private medical colleges and deemed universities.
MBBS from NMC-recognised institution + 1 year compulsory rotatory internship completion. No age limit. NEET PG qualifying score mandatory for all MS admissions.
NEET PG is the single entrance for MS admission. NTA conducts the exam. Any qualifying score opens management quota seats. Higher scores access MCC AIQ and state government seats. There is no exemption or alternative route.
MCC conducts centralised PG counselling for AIQ seats at government medical colleges. State bodies handle remaining state quota seats. MS Orthopaedics and MS Ophthalmology AIQ seats are competitive. MS ENT and MS General Surgery are more accessible.
Private medical colleges and deemed universities offer MS management quota seats. Only the qualifying NEET PG score is required — no rank cutoff. These seats fill within days of results. OEF helps MBBS doctors identify verified MS management quota options quickly.
NEET PG is mandatory for all MS admissions. No institution can legally offer MS without NEET PG qualification. OEF works strictly within NMC-compliant processes.
Fees vary by institution and state. Karnataka, WB, UP tend to have lower fees for MS management quota.
Northeast India — 8 states, 45+ million people — has a severe and growing shortage of trained surgical specialists. Most Tier-2 cities in Assam (Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat), Manipur (Churachandpur, Thoubal), Nagaland (Dimapur, Kohima), Meghalaya (Shillong), and Mizoram (Aizawl) have insufficient access to specialist surgeons. Patients travel hours to Guwahati or even Kolkata for conditions that should be managed locally.
An MS surgeon who returns to Northeast India after completing their degree faces virtually no competition in most branches. The patient volume is immediate and high. OEF has guided several Assam and Manipur MBBS doctors into MS programmes — the ones who returned to practice in NE India have consistently built highly successful careers within 2–3 years.
Road accidents, bone fractures, and joint disease are extremely common in NE India’s hilly terrain. An Orthopaedic surgeon in any NE India city will have full OPD from Day 1. Most cities are desperately underserved. ₹5–10L/month achievable within 3 years.
Cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma burden is high and growing in NE India. Eye hospitals and phaco surgery centres are highly profitable. An MS Ophthalmologist in Imphal, Shillong, or Dimapur faces minimal competition. ₹3–6L/month realistic within 2 years.
ENT conditions — sinusitis, hearing loss, throat cancer in betel nut chewing population — are extremely prevalent in NE India. An MS ENT doctor in any NE India state capital is immediately referral-overloaded. ₹2–4L/month achievable within 12–18 months of practice.
Maternal health is a critical priority across NE India. Most districts lack trained OBG specialists. A returning MS OBG doctor — especially female — can build a lifelong, highly impactful, and financially rewarding practice anywhere in the region.
MS ENT and MS General Surgery management quota seats are the most accessible in terms of NEET PG score requirement. MS Ophthalmology and MS Orthopaedics are more competitive. However, accessibility varies by state and institution. OEF analyses your specific rank and presents realistic options across all MS branches available for your score.
Yes, absolutely. MBBS from any NMC-recognised college in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, or any other NE India state qualifies you for NEET PG. Your MS admission is based on NEET PG score and MBBS internship completion, not the state where you did your MBBS. OEF regularly helps MBBS graduates from NE India colleges into MS programmes across Karnataka, WB, UP, and Tamil Nadu.
For Northeast India context specifically — yes. An MS Orthopaedics degree with management quota fees of ₹12–35L per year (₹36–105L total) is a large investment. But an Orthopaedic surgeon returning to a NE India city can recover this within 3–5 years of practice. Road accident trauma surgery alone in Assam and Meghalaya guarantees full surgical lists. The regional ROI on MS Orthopaedics is very strong. OEF helps calculate realistic payback timelines in the counselling session.
