Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) is a premier Medical Institute established by Andaman & Nicobar Medical Education and Research Society (ANIMERS) under Andaman & Nicobar Administration. The primary aim of the Institute is to provide state of art Medical Education, health care and research in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Institute being the only Medical College in this region is committed to uplift the health care delivery system for the people of these Islands.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS),Port Blair came into being on 1st Sep 2015 (Academic Session 2015-16).
Opening up of a Medical College in Port Blair was a long cherished dream & desire of the Islanders for almost 04 decades. 107 acres of land was allocated by Andaman and Nicobar Administration to DHS for the establishment of the Medical College in 1989. Efforts to establish a Medical college at Port Blair were made but it could not fructify because of the non- availability of teaching Faculty. A PIL was filed in Kolkata High Court in 2005. Honorable High Court directed the A & Administration to constitute a committee under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary for the establishment of a Medical and an Engineering College at Port Blair.
A high level committee under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration was constituted, which after due deliberation recommended to establish a Medical and an Engineering College at Port Blair. All efforts to establish a Medical College at Port Blair were persisted with, a consulting agency, HSCC was hired by the O/o DHS to establish a Medical college at Port Blair, which suggested a PPP model for setting up a Medical College at Port Blair.
Before the decision of establishment of Medical College under PPP module could be finalized, a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) of Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for "establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/referral hospitals" came into being in 2013, whereby 55 district hospitals (having 20 acres of land, 300 beds and no Medical College in that district) were to be upgraded to Medical Colleges. Under this, CSS, GOI was to fund 75% (one time share) for the cost of the project. This funding now has been reduced to 60% as the central and 40% as the State shares. The existing 478 bedded G.B.Pant district hospital is upgraded to a teaching hospital. . ANIIMS is registered under ANIMERS which is a registered society under the Society Registration Act,1860 with registration no. 1482. The institute is affiliated to Pondicherry University vide their Letter of Consent with reference no.PU/AW-2/ANIMERS/2014-15/23. Professor Gurmeet Singh is the Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University and Dr B. Chithra is the Registrar of Pondicherry University.
The Institute has been registered with Medical Council of India (MCI) for its permission to start MBBS Course with an annual intake of 100 students is vide Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India , Letter No. MCI-34(41)(E-51)/2014-MED dated 23rd September, 2014.
