Government Dental College & Hospital, Afzalganj is a College & Institute in Telangana. In 1958 the Dental Wing was started in People’s Medical at Humanyunagar. The first batch of 25 Students were admitted for BDS course during July/August 1959. Later in 1962, the Govt. Dental College and Hospital was developed as a Dental Wing of the Osmania Medical College & Osmania General Hospital situated in OGH campus at Afzalgunj.
On 24-12-1979 the Dental Wing was separated from the Osmania Medical College and a full fledged Government Dental College and Hospital was established and was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Minister for Medical and Health, Sri.A.Madan Mohan Garu. The post of Head of the Dental Wing was upgraded to Principal in cadre of the Additional Director of Medical Education. Dr.B.Seshadri was appointed as the first Principal of this independent and prestigious institution. On 26th March 1982 the Govt. Dental College was shifted to the second floor of newly constructed Golden Jubilee Block of Osmania General Hospital, Afzalgunj. The number of Students admitted into B.D.S. course was increased from 25 to 32 per year. Later in 1985, BDS seats were increased from 32 to 40 per year, till 2013. In 2013, BDS seats were increased from 40 to 100 seats.
The Post Graduate courses were introduced during year 1980-1981 in four specialties with one admission in each specialty i.e. 1) Orthodontia 2) Periodontia 3) Prosthdoontics 4) Oral Medicine and Radiology. In 1985-1986 the P.G. seats were increased to two numbers in above mentioned specialties (i.e. 8 seats). In the year 1989, Post Graduate course was also introduced in three more specialties i.e.
1) Oral Surgery 2) Pedodontia 3) Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics with 2 seats in each specialty, Keeping in view the increasing need for specialized Dental Faculty the Post Graduate seats were increased from 7 to 14. Presently the Post Graduates course is available in seven different specialties with two admissions each year in each specialty. Later in the year 2015-16, after a long gap of 26 years, again we went for Increase in PG seats from 2 to 3 in all the seven departments and starting of PG in the department of Oral Pathology. Now we got permission for increase of PG seats from 14 to 24.
Government also introduced Vocational Courses i.e. Dental Technician/Dental Hygienist at Government Dental College and Hospital, Hyderabad with 10 admissions in each course to be run in coordination with Government City College, Hyderabad. These courses are also recognized by the Dental Council of India, New Delhi. Previously, we were sharing the building with Osmania General Hospital. In the year 2003 December 15th we have our own building with 1 lakh Sq ft built up area. GDC&H is the only one Govt. dental college in the entire state of Telangana with Post Graduate course.
