The Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George's Medical University, Lucknow was established in 1949. It is a constituent unit of the King George's Medical University, Lucknow. The college was set up under the Govt. of India and the guidance of Dr. B. Sampat. Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George's Medical University is self-affiliated with the King George's Medical University, Lucknow.
The college is also approved and recognized by the Dental Council of India, New Delhi. The college aims at providing improved patient care through research, education and clinical expertise. As the college is a grant-in-aid college the facilities to be provided and the fee structure are decided by the government. In 1949, the Dental Wing of King George's Medical College started as a part of the ENT Department. Dr. B. Sampat was in charge then. In 1952, as the Department of Dentistry, it was shifted to a separate premises. King George's Medical College was upgraded to a Medical University in 2002. The Dental College was then a constituent college of this new medical university. In 2003, the Dental College was again upgraded to a separate university.
In 2007, the university status was given to the Faculty of Dental Sciences under King George's Medical University. Among four dental universities in the world, Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George's Medical University has been ranked 4th worldwide. Under the Government of NCT of Uttar Pradesh the university has been declared as a 'Center of Excellence'. In the field of dental sciences, Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George's Medical University has been rated as one of the best dental institutions. Acclaimed to be one of the best centres for higher learning the college has been known internationally for providing excellent dental education, especially oral health, keeping in mind the aim of the institution. A five-year undergraduate programme (BDS) and a three-year postgraduate programme (MDS) are offered at the institute with various specializations. Under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, the college offers certificate courses and diploma through distance learning. Through various collaborations, partnerships and engagements, the institute have tied up with various foreign colleges and conducts various exchange programmes.
The institute has its own selection process which is based on merit as has been specified by the university. It enables prospective students to fill in their academic qualifications and interest. Candidates should check their marks, best of four/PCM/PCB, whichever is applicable and the cut-off percentage as specified by the college. There are seventy seats in all and admission is possible only after appearing for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).
